An aging population has resulted in more seniors requiring Alternative Level of Care (ALC) which is generally provided in nursing homes but as not enough are available this has resulted in ALC individuals being keep in hospital acute care beds causing emergency room backups, surgical cancellations etc.

These ALC individuals should be taken care of in a "transitional care" venue until more suitable accomodation is available. There is such a unit available in Sudbury but it is scheduled to be closed and this petition advocates that it remain open.

Due to continuing and projected need for long term care facilities in our community and the serious adverse effect on our Regional Hospital emergency department and acute care services due to ALC patients at this facility, we the undersigned support the Mayor and Councilors’ Seniors’ Panel motion that the Memorial site Transitional Care Unit due to close in March (2011) remain open until at least 2013 as recommended by the LHIN Alternative Level of Care Steering Group and that the provincial authorities involved including the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care reverse the decision to close the Memorial Site TCU and to maintain this operation until such time as suitable permanent and sustainable ALC accommodations are made available.
