Working as a nurse I have almost had to give up my career choice once I became a single parent. Child care starts at 6:30am and Out of School hours Care (OSHC) 7am. Majority of nursing shifts in a hospital or aged care facility start at 7am. If you thought nursing was a family friendly career choice think again. I have found a family day care centre who will take my 2 children and walk them to school. She is only available 2 days per week. Am I stuck until my children are high school age? I wonder how many other families struggle with these hours of operation? The days of stay at home parents or the 9-5 worker is gone. Why hasn't child care and schooling caught up with the times. If nurses start at 7am OSHC should start at 6-6:30am. Please sign the petition to help single parents continue working in the health care occupation.
Families of Australia request an increase in child care hours of operation. An increase will help single parents back out in the work force and off centrelink payments.
