On November 30, the Palm Springs City Council will meet to consider a vacation rental ordinance that would impose onerous limitations on homeowners and thwart our city's flourishing tourism industry.
Vacation rentals, or short-term rentals (STRs) are a critical part of the Palm Springs economy. They allow travelers to immerse themselves in all our city has to offer, beyond the traditional hotel districts. These visitors then spend money at area businesses – whether that's one of our many great restaurants, golf courses, or shops. Homeowners benefit from the extra income that allows them to reinvest in their properties, boosting neighborhood value and vitality. This is an economic engine we can't afford to lose.
The ordinance set to come before City Council would drastically restrict the ability of homeowners to rent their own properties, hurting Palm Springs communities. Instead, the Palm Springs City Council should seek to establish smart STR regulations that encourage compliance while raising tax revenue and embracing this innovative industry.
We, the undersigned, call on the Palm Springs City Council to oppose an ordinance severely capping rentals and instead enact reasonable vacation rental regulations that will preserve this key industry.
