The New Orleans City Council will soon vote on proposed regulations for short-term rentals (STRs) that would outlaw vacation and whole home rentals, negatively impacting homeowners, local businesses and communities, and traveler choice. All STRs serve an important function in our city.

In particular, vacation and whole home rentals allow families traveling together to have communal space to cook, eat, and gather in a home that is not occupied by the owner. Visitors are often in town to attend weddings, celebrate births, or attend graduations. These visitors frequent local restaurants, shops, and boutiques, increasing spending in the local economy and supporting jobs.

While all STRs support the New Orleans economy, the proposed regulations unfairly penalizes vacation rentals compared to those renting out just a spare bedroom. Vacation and whole home rentals are extremely well maintained, and their owners/managers employ local citizens who are hired for cleaning, landscaping, painting, and contracting.

Smart, equitable regulations for STRs can ensure these travel options are safe, raise tax revenue for the city, and benefit all of New Orleans. Smart, equitable regulations will keep New Orleans' tourism industry thriving.

We, the undersigned, call on the New Orleans City Council to enact smart, equitable regulations for all short-term rentals that do not outlaw vacation and whole home short-term rentals.
