I am Dr. Steve Gall (PE Doctorate) and I have been trying to get a K-6 daily physical activity mandate in the Arizona State Legislature for the last 5 years and unfortunately it has been unsuccessful. There are many benefits to daily physical activity. Not just for the health of the children where child obesity exists but also it improves academic performance and behavior.
All the current research confirms this. Daily physical activity in the elementary school will cost 0 money and will not be restricted to time or to specific activity.
We, the undersigned, call on the Arizona State Legislature to pass a bill that requires public school districts and charter school districts to provide the children of grades K-6 with daily physical activity.
PE classes will satisfy this requirement but recess immediately before or after lunch will not satisfy the requirement. All the current research confirms that daily physical activity breaks improve student performance and behavior in the elementary school.
