Forming in Sydney in 1980, the Sunnyboys burst onto the rock’n’roll scene alongside contemporaries Mental As Anything, Midnight Oil, INXS and the Models playing legendary venues such as Chequers and the Civic.
Influenced by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The MC5, Elvis Costello and English New Wave – the Sunnyboys became one of the first Australian bands to cross over from the underground into the mainstream.
Upon release their debut LP was met with critical acclaim, securing their place as one of the most influential Australian bands of their generation. Jeremy was 20, Peter was 22. By October 1981 the album had reached number 13 on the national album charts, while the album’s second single ‘Alone with You’ reached number 15 on the national singles chart.
The LP has since been listed in the top 40 in the book 100 Best Australian Albums. While the Sunnyboys recorded and released sophomore album Individuals in 1982, and third and final LP Get Some Fun in 1984, they failed to meet the success of their debut, and with mounting industry pressures and Jeremy’s deteriorating health, they split in 1984.
It would take another 28 years and an invitation to appear at Dig It Up! (The Hoodoo Gurus Invitational) at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre before the original Sunnyboys line-up would finally perform together again. After a rocky road back to the stage, this legendary outfit played with all the intensity and verve as they had all those years ago, moving the audience to tears. The band have since played several gigs and are embarking on a national tour in 2014.
