Subsidising the cost of blood testing lancets by the Federal Government

There are over 1 million diagnosed diabetics in Australia, each of whom incurring substantial extra costs in managing their chronic disease.
Most items such as blood glucose meters, testing strips, insulin syringes and needles are subsidised by the Federal Government through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).
However, lancets which are used to complete the necessary and regular blood testing regime of a diabetic, are not subsidised. This situation can discourage diabetics from testing regularly resulting in medical complications and extra cost to the health system.
Recognising that the proper care of diabetes sufferers can help limit future cost increases to the health system, we the undersigned petitioners call upon the Australian Federal Government to take the necessary steps to allow the NDSS to subsidise the cost of blood testing lancets.
