Many Zoos due to regulations set out by the EAZA - European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. They annually kill their stock for either gene pool, because they are not breeding or as its called over stock.

Five giraffes have been put down in Europe since October 2012, all of them in Denmark;

Four hippos were killed across Europe in 2012 - in Portugal, Spain, Germany and Denmark;

Twenty-two healthy zebras were put down between 2000 and 2012, including one at Marwell in the UK.

Eleven Arabian Oryx were killed in Edinburgh, London, Rotterdam and Zurich between 2000 and 2009, plus dozens more at zoos in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (which are part of the European breeding programme).

To replace this stock Zoos are now PAYING Canned Hunting sites in South Africa for more stock. In the case of Big Cats these are already inbred and unsuitable for breeding because they are basically bred to be shot by paying hunters.

This has to stop, if Zoos have overstock then they should be told to stop breeding and to let the animals die off naturally.

The EAZA stud book even quotes what animals are bred for culling.
