Since September 2019 the Inner West Council has been using glyphosate, a chemical that has been definitively linked to the cancer non-Hodgkins lymphoma for weed removal across the council. The council itself admits it is “generally used daily,” and there is no requirement for them to notify residents when or where it has been used. Previously, the Leichhardt council were predominantly using steam and hand weeding to manage weeds. We know that council staff are using glyphosate around parks, playgrounds, schools, childcare centres, hospitals, and footpaths, putting the health of us, our children and our pets at risk.
We demand that the Inner West Council phase out the use of glyphosate for weed management, and use alternative methods such as steaming and manual removal of weeds. The use of glyphosate around our schools, playgrounds, parks and footpaths risks the health of us, our children and our pets. Council workers who use this dangerous chemical daily are at more serious risk of cancer and other health issues, and we call upon the council to protect residents, workers and the environment by stopping the use of glyphosate/roundup in our community.
