In May 2019 the Inner West Council adopted a Weed Management Policy which stated that glyphosate should only be used as a matter of last resort where other methods cannot be applied and spot control of persistent weeds that resist other treatments occur. In fact glyphosate, a chemical which has been linked to the cancer non-Hodgkins lymphoma, is in the Council's own words "generally used daily" and the use of glyphosate in the Inner West Council area has increased in the last 12 months. Council staff are using glyphosate around parks, playgrounds, schools, childcare centres, hospitals and footpaths, putting our health and that of our children and pets, and of workers, at risk. Previously, at least in the former Leichhardt Council area, use of glyphosate was extremely limited and most weed control was undertaken by non-chemical means such as steam weeding.

Inner West Council should phase out the use of glyphosate/roundup for weed management and use alternative methods such as steam weeding and manual removal of weeds. The use of glyphosate around our schools, playgrounds, parks and footpaths risks our health, the health of our children and our pets. Council workers who use this dangerous chemical daily are at more serious risk of health issues and we call upon Council to protect residents, workers and the environment by stopping the use of glyphosate/roundup in our community.
