That BioSecurity Australia should immediately reverse quarantine measures requiring testing / processing of raw prawns and prawn products on the basis that the potential diseases in these products are not harmful to humans.
Rationale
The diseases that the quarantine controls seek to protect Australia from are not harmful to humans and have no way of reaching prawn crops.
The supposed protection of the prawn crop is meaningless as there is no way for the infection to transmit from humans to the prawns.
In any case, the less than possible protection of the $45 Million prawn farming industry is at the direct peril of the $80 Million sale of prawns in Australia’s restaurants.
In trade terms, the impact of placing ‘trade barriers’ on raw prawns may have an impact on the trade relationships with major trade partners such as Thailand, China and Malaysia.
