It has recently come to our attention that large on-line and brick-and-mortar retailers are selling equipment which allows any dog to pose as a Service Dog. These vests, patches, tags, and other equipment perpetuate the use of untrained pets as service animals, and when an untrained handler pairs with an untrained animal, it puts true service animals and their handlers at risk for injury and exclusion. The sale of this equipment on such a broad platform makes it easy for an untrained animal owner to falsely claim the rights of a legitimate service dog. We know that legitimate service animals have rights under the ADA that pets do not. With these rights already in question, it should not be this easy to purchase Service Animal equipment.

We, the undersigned, compel Amazon, Chewy.com and Walmart to stop the sale of "Service Animal" vests, patches, and tags. The ADA says "Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities." By offering these items for purchase, you put responsible, disabled handlers with legitimate service dogs at risk for discrimination, and in danger of physical injury from interaction with an untrained animal. Until these products come off your pages and your shelves, we will encourage friends, family, and other Service Animal Professionals to seek other retailers for the items we purchase daily.
