The Milton Street Precinct is a commercial and retail development being constructed on land next to Mackay Airport. While it promises future business growth, the project is expected to permanently alter the identity of our community.
The area currently reflects Mackay’s unique character — a peaceful mix of sugarcane fields, open space, and modest development. This project introduces large-scale commercial activity just steps from residential neighborhoods and farmland. It risks:
Increasing traffic congestion on Milton Street and surrounding roads
Disrupting the quiet, regional identity of the airport approach
Encouraging further overdevelopment at the cost of green space and local charm
Putting pressure on existing infrastructure and small local businesses
Many Mackay residents value our community’s laid-back atmosphere, scenic approach to the airport, and agricultural roots. The Milton Precinct project does not reflect these values and appears to prioritize commercial interests over community well-being.
We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and friends of Mackay, respectfully call upon the Mackay Regional Council, North Queensland Airports, and relevant state authorities to:
Immediately halt or suspend all stages of the Milton Street Precinct development
Conduct a comprehensive public review of the environmental, social, and community impact of this project
Reassess the need for large-scale commercial infrastructure at the airport's doorstep, especially given its potential to damage the unique, natural feel of Mackay’s urban-rural balance
This development, if allowed to proceed, risks transforming our peaceful regional city into yet another overbuilt corridor. Mackay deserves better development that respects community input, supports sustainability, and enhances rather than erases our local identity.
We urge decision-makers to listen to the voices of Mackay’s people and protect the character of our city for generations to come.
