One reason Texas has so many people held pretrial in county jails— resulting in high numbers of deaths due to medical neglect and suicide—is that out of 254 counties, only 5 use risk assessment tools that give the county a good way to release people without cash bond.
The Travis County Jail has been called the largest mental health facility in Central Texas. However, it is not a mental health facility. As long as we say that the jail is a mental health facility or hospital, we do not properly emphasize the lack of mental health services in our criminal justice system. There are a large number of people in the Travis County Jail with mental health issues that are not getting the medical services they need.
So many inmates have no means of support on the outside and no one to advocate for them, medical care is a Constitutional RIGHT to every inmate.
Help us STOP THE INHUMANE AND CRUEL TREATMENT and total DENIAL OF MENTAL HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE for inmates.
We CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
We the undersigned call on the OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR OF TEXAS GREG ABBOTT to step in and OVERHAUL the entire TEXAS JAIL SYSTEM, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards holds NO real power and do not inspect and enforce violations.
So many mysterious deaths occur each and every year. Travis County is ONE OF THE WORSE . Texas Commission on Jail Standards is NOT powerful and cannot direct jails in every aspect; it actually only has limited authority over how a sheriff runs his jail.
In the average county jail in Texas, more than 60% of the people are not yet convicted. Problems include poor medical care, untreated mental illness, overuse of solitary for those with mental disorders, inhumane jail conditions, lack of care during pregnancy, overly long pretrial incarceration and the damage to families, livelihoods and communities.
PLEASE HELP US MAKE CHANGE and make the SHERIFF'S ACCOUNTABLE for their Jails.
