We call on the Mayor of London to refuse planning permission for the above planning application (which the Strategic Development Committee of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets resolved to grant on 13 March 2008) for the following reasons:
1. The scale and massing of the scheme are out of character with the local
area.
2. The density levels are more than double those set out in the London Plan
Density Matrix (Table 4B.1)
3. The scheme fails to address the impact of a major tall building element
(12 storey slab block) in its Tall Building Study.
4. The scheme will have a significant detrimental effect on neighbouring
conservation areas according to English Heritage.
5. The scheme will have a detrimental effect on the quality and character of
Bethnal Green Rd, a major neighbourhood artery for pedestrians and cyclists.
6. The scheme fails to meet the London Plan’s targets for affordable homes
7. The scheme fails to provide sufficient family housing.
8. The public consultation exercise was inadequate and the Local Area
Partnership was not informed of the progress of the application.
9. No Equalities Impact Assessment has been carried out.
10. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has not complied with its own
policies and guidelines in resolving that planning permission be granted.
