Strip searching of prisoners amounts to human rights abuse. Many women prisoners have a history of childhood abuse and strip searching only magnifies the insult and does nothing to reduce bad behavior or recidivism.

The rate of re-offending by women is increasing in NSW and the lack of counseling and support networks for ex-prisoners is aggravating the situation.

The 7.30 Report NSW on Nov 8, 2013, made this very clear.

Strip Searching of prisoners is a human rights abuse and doesn't improve behavior or make prisons safer. Nor is there evidence that strip searching reduces contraband in prisons or reduces offending.

Scanners could be used to show if there are weapons or drugs concealed instead of this degrading practice.

We, the undersigned, call on the NSW Attorney General to ban strip searching of all prisoners throughout the State and to install scanners in every prison.
