Stop Sambhar Lake saline water theft by private salt manufacturers in Rajasthan
- Target:
- Rajasthan
- Region:
- India
History of Sambhar Lake goes back to 1500 years. Geological Survey of India conducted a survey of salt lake from 1879-1904 and found 4,30,00,00 ton salt manufacturd during the period, 240000 workers employed for salt extraction using traditional methods. Salt deposited in lake bed by seasonal rains. Water supply from three rivers fed this lake. Lake lies on borders of Jaipur and Jodhpur.
Private salt manufacturers who are farm land owners whose agriculture activity has led them to seek permission from Government to manufacture salt. Second are those who are allotted land for salt manufacturing. Third are Central and State Government Reserved land. In first two cases of land conversion and allotment Government has to first check the avaialability of brine on the land which it is not doing and is blindly doing all works. Tubewells, borings, borewells are allowed to be built near sambhar lake area illegally for brine theft for salt manufacturing. An IAS Officer conducted survey and gave findings and recommendations to Government. But under pressure of private salt manufacturers, Government is not ready to comply the report.
We, the undersigned, call on the UN to save Sambhar Lake because it is a Ramsar site also and Ramsar seeks protection of Wetland which it is presently not doing.
Pressure by rich and private salt manufacturers on Government to convert land from agriculture to salt manufacturing is allowing illegal salt manufacturing and the lake is drying. Appoint a Committee with our involvement to review this crisis.
