Stop pet shops selling un-desexed cats and dogs

The SPCA all over the country have been working hard for many years to try and reduce the number of unwanted/stray cats in New Zealand through de-sexing, As an organization that promotes responsible pet ownership the Manawatu SPCA has strict policy not to re-home and cat or dog until it has been de-sexed in order to make sure we do not add to an already out of control problem in our region. Unfortunately our work in this area sits in stale mate as we have not been able to reduce the amount of unwanted kittens coming through our doors in nearly 10 years. We have put a huge amount of money into public de-sexing for felines for those on a low income. This is money that could have been spent on different programs that help prevent cruelty to animals (our main focus). However with the problem so large we have not able to ignore it but we feel we are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

The fact of the matter is some pet shops in the area are pushing out 1,000’s of kittens per year and all of them un-desexed. This is not being responsible and is adding to a very large problem. Kittens can be de-sexed at an average of 1kg and have been able to for some time now. Voucher systems don’t work as most people don’t use them FACT! So this is just people making money and not caring about the consequences pure and simple. This is not an attack on people however it is the SPCA standing up for what we believe is right.

So we are coming to you, the public. We need your help to get those in power to listen. Please sign our petition today for mandatory de-sexing for all cats and dogs sold out of pet shops
