Psychiatric hospitals throughout the country discharge their patients or service users with out due cause or consideration for their safety. Nor do they make it their job to ensure that service users make it home safely, unfortunately because if they did my mother would still be alive today. She had to pay the highest price, her life.

She was released from a psychiatric hospital, thirty miles away from home in treacherous conditions snow, rain and when temperatures where in minus degrees. NO lift waiting NO friendly face. Just 30 miles to go on foot with less than three Euros in her pocket. She died of Hypothermia. She was just forty seven when she died, she left twelve Children behind.

The sad thing is nobody cared enough to call a family member and have them ready and waiting BEFORE she was discharged. The strange thing is the hospital said they should have ensured her safe return as its there duty but it never happened.

My Mother didn’t die in vain and as a result of her death I want the law changed I don’t want a service user discharged unless there is somebody waiting outside. To ensure that they get home safely, No one ensured that for my mother, which is why I don’t want another person too die as a result of the same mistake again.

Enough people have died as a result how many more people will you going to kill?

MARY HARRNEY how many more have to DIE.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) should completely review how they discharge patients from psychiatric hospitals.
