Ecological extinction caused by overfishing precedes all other pervasive human disturbance to coastal ecosystems, including pollution, degradation of water quality, and climate change.

Overfishing of marine animals such as cod, oysters, and other species is also the primary cause leading to many problems that have appeared recently in coastal waters around the world. In locations all over the world, increases in disease, invasions of non-native species and declining water quality can be traced back to a loss of certain marine species.

In addition to overharvesting, disturbance of underwater habitats is a primary cause leading to the collapse of fish populations.

We, the undersigned, urge the Department of Commerce to cut the catch limit of Blue Fin Tuna and Georges Bank cod by at least a third for the months of April, May, June, and July.
