The school board in Montgomery County passed a budget Tuesday night.
While administrative furloughs were taken off the table, 25 full-time equivalent spots will stay empty, up from 13 proposed at the meetings start.
A pay-to-play plan was put into place as parents who want their students to participate in athletics will have to pay a $100 fee, said school officials.
The Board of Supervisors several weeks ago approved a record 12-cent tax increase on the real estate levy.
School officials said this helped, but only a $91 million budget was approved, leaving the school board with a little more than $4 million to cut.
Expenses for the school board have increased over the last few years, including $124 million to build two new schools and renovate an old one.
This petition is to make sure that ALL students are able to play without paying!
Our youth are told to stay out of trouble and stay fit, well neither one will be happening if our children have to sit at home because there parents are not able to pay this fee.
I believe that the school board should have maybe thought twice about building a new school in Blacksburg and we would not be forced to make choices that are just plain ridiculous!
