The construction of a road joining Houmoed Avenue between Noordhoek Main Road and Kommetjie Main Road was turned down in 2003 by then Provincial Minister for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.
Recently some residents were notified that the Kommetjie Road Project / Upgrade wants to make use of the same road reserve to alleviate congestion while they are busy with construction on Kommetjie Main Road. There are talks of it being a temporary road but this would be impossible, as a road constructed through the wetland area cannot be reversed or brought back to its original state. The damage will be done. Also, they are considering permanently extending Houmoed Avenue as the City of Cape Town applied to do in 2004.
There has been little to no public participation. The residents directly affected weren't notified until myself and another resident made an effort to contact them and notify them.
There is a big dam (Artesian Well) in front of two of the properties where the proposed road is to be built. It is a breeding ground to the endangered Leopard Toads, there are Cape Otter, Little Bittern, Water Mongoose, Marsh Harriers and dozens of other bird species, fish and terrapin to name a few. These and the avifauna, microfauna and other aspects of of the wetland health would be severely affected and irreparably changed by the construction of a road through the area.

We, the undersigned, are in support of the Residents Objection Initiative to stop the proposed construction of Houmoed Avenue extension to Lekkerwater Road and the permanent extension of Houmoed Avenue through the wetland area and directly in front of some properties along this area.
