My nephew has recently been given a 12 months jail sentence for a domestic issue which would have never gotten as far as the courts if he had not been a police officer. He was accused by his wife of stealing her jewellery, jewellery for which she had no evidence actually existed. In court she said that her parents had given her this jewellery but there was no proof of its existence as her parents were not in the habit of keeping receipts.

The sheriff gave my nephew a guilty verdict and he said it is "because you are a police officer and a liar". I have spoken to a number of MP's since and they all say that police officers and lawyers are treated harshly in court for any conviction. What I want to know is why? Are they not human like everyone else?

This petition is in order that judicial law can be changed and when a case is taken to court occupation should not be revealed unless that occupation has been used as part of the crime.

A domestic issue has no relevance at all with any occupation, no matter what it is, but the punishement given is much higher if you are a police officer or a lawyer. Most domestic issues don't even reach court but apparently a police officer can be treated appallingly.

We, the undersigned, call on the Scottish and British Governments to create a law which stipulates occupation can only be revealed if that said occupation has been used as part of the crime committed.
