Target:
Florida Governor Rick Scott and Florida Legislature
Region:
United States of America

The George Zimmerman trial verdict has brought many protestors of the Stand Your Ground law.

Some protestors are being encouraged by those outside of our state, who are nationally recognized figures that hold positions of power and are trying to initiate divisiveness within our great state, even to the point that they are threatening the legislators of Florida with boycotts.

We, the undersigned, call on the Governor of the State of Florida and Florida Legislators to uphold the Stand Your Ground law as written in the State of Florida, as of Saturday, July 13, 2013.

There are situations where the Stand Your Ground law is necessary for the survival of possible bodily injury or deadly harm.

We feel the burden of retreat should not be put upon the person/persons who are being threatened with bodily harm or deadly harm.

The Stand Your Ground law puts the burden on the aggressor to either back down or change their mind in their intent to cause bodily harm and/or deadly harm, by allowing the victim to stand their ground.

We feel the attention to this matter has been initiated by the George Zimmerman verdict and those protesting the outcome and threatening the State of Florida with boycotts.

We feel our Governor or Legislators should not be held hostage to demands or threats.

Statistics in Florida show that 54% of black deadly crimes are defended by the Stand Your Ground law in Florida's courts of law. We feel the majority of people who are opposing and protesting this law, due to the Zimmerman verdict, are the very ones who are using the law as their defense in Florida courts.

We request you stand firm and not be swayed by "threats of protestors and proposed boycotts" for Florida and keep the Stand Your Ground law as written as of July 13, 2013.
