Horses are recognised by law as a vehicle when being ridden on roads. As the country expands horse riders are losing access to safe and local areas to ride, making roads their only access. Unfortunately, many drivers do not understand how dangerous it can be to speed past a horse which is an unpredictable animal. We wish for a "Slow and wide berth when passing horses on or near the road" be a message distributed to the community to promote safety and help foster a mutual understanding between all road users.
We, call on the RTA to distribute a "Slow and wide berth" message to the community, to raise awareness of road safety when driving in the vicinity of horses.
