In early 2012, Tuareg rebels started fighting government troops in Mali. They wanted to create a separate country called Azawad. Islamist rebels also wanted a separate state in Northern Mali. They teamed up with rebels.

Because these rebels had so much weaponry power from the 2011 Libyan war (many had fought there), they were easily defeating Malian troops. Now, Northern Mali is virtually under control of the rebels.

In mid-2012, Islamists began to start taking hold. They forced both Tuareg and non-Tuareg citizens out of their home. They are now destroying homes, and are also destroying historical landmarks. They believe in extreme sharia, saying that these landmarks are harem. But these also mean a lot to many people, even Muslims.

The African Union has been reluctant to send troops. They claim they will assist the Malian government eventually, but most of their efforts are being put in the campaign against the LRA, which aren't much of a problem any more.

We, the undersigned, demand that the African Union, and the United Nations, send troops to Mali to quell the uprising in the Northern part of the country, and bring stability.
