The children who attend St. Patrick's Catholic school and Otonabee Valley Public School are being forced to walk to school effective the start of the 2007/2008 school year based on wide spread use of a sidewalk and walkway route provided by the city of Peterborough.

The distances being suggested for walking are 1.0km for junior and senior kindergarten and 1.6 kms from Grades1-8. Included in this new memorandum are Middlefied Drive, Stewart Drive, Crystal Drive, and Milford Drive. There are city buses that run along Middlefied which has no sidewalks as well as Milford Drive and Trailview Drive. The pathway that extends to the back property of Ottonabee is not maintained whatsoever and there are two other entrance points from Humber Road and Rideau Crescent.

The sidewalks were installed on Ottonabee Drive in the summer of 2006. There still is no exactly safe route for children of the advised memorandum to walk to school. St. Patrick's school is closer than Ottonabee Valley and yet they will bus their students until grade 3.

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Peterborough authorities and the School Board to reconsider the school walk boundary and transportation changes. If we don't feel that our children would be safe how can you?
