United States of America

In 2012, President Obama signed an executive order creating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. This program deferred the deportation of close to 800,000 individuals, often called dreamers, who were brought into the country as minors. To receive this deferred action they either had to be in High School, have a diploma or GED, or be honorably discharged from the Armed Forces. They also had to have no significant criminal history. On September 5, President Trump ended that program. Regardless one's party loyalties, we believe that it is important to act now to protect these young adults who, brought here as children, know no other home but America. It is estimated that if Congress does not act, 1,400 people per day will lose their jobs costing employers billions of dollars in employee turnover costs. It is also estimated that it will cause the US economy to lose $460 billion from our national GDP over the next decade.

This petition is for residents of South Carolina's 5th Congressional District, to be delivered to Congressman Ralph Norman, urging his support of the DREAM Act of 2017. This bill will give legal residence to these young adults granted they complete high school or get a GED; complete further education or have 3 years of legal work experience or serve two years in the US Military; and have no substantial criminal history.

We, the undersigned constituents of South Carolina's 5th congressional district, call on Representative Ralph Norman protect dreamers by supporting the bipartisan DREAM Act of 2017 (H.R. 3440).
