Local news has reported, “Once Waste Management’s new seven year contract starts, fees are set to go up by 39% for twice a week trash pickup. According to Waste Management the rate increase is for more trucks and staff, in addition to another cart delivery route to align with the continued growth in Brevard County.” Waste Management is a contractor doing work for the county government. If their customer base is increasing due to development, which results in an increase in costs to cover the increased work requirement, according to Brevard County: “COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL IMPACT FEES HELP TO ENSURE that EXISTING COUNTY RESIDENTS WILL NOT BEAR THE COST OF NEW FACILITIES AND SERVICES NECESSARY TO SUPPORT NEW DEVELOPMENT.”

If Waste Management customer base is increasing due to development, which results in an increase in their costs to cover the increased work requirement, THEY SHOULD GET THEIR MONEY FROM THE IMPACT FEES. DO NOT PASS THIS ON TO EXISTING RESIDENTS.

Please tell the Brevard County Government/Planning and Development Dept. to handle this situation properly and not tax existing Brevard County residents for this situation. Use the impact fees. That’s what they are there for.
