President Bush is considering using the American Antiquities Act of 1906 to create marine national monuments in our offshore waters. These waters encompass some of our most prolific fishing areas thus creating large marine protected areas(MPAs) that we the American public will never be able to fish again.

This will have devastating impact to the local economy. With the President's signature alone this act will undermine the democratic system our country is founded on, not to mention overriding the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Act that requires a public process, ongoing review, and input from all user groups in order to create a marine restricted area.

The areas that are being considered are high spots, ridges, and reefs in The Gulf of Mexico, East Coast of Florida, Georgia, Carolinas, and Pacific Ocean Island areas.

The goal of this petition is to let President Bush know that we DO NOT APPROVE of his use of the Antiquities Act to manage our fisheries and oceans as they are complex and require a more science based approach.

We, the undersigned, request President Bush to not utilize the American Antiquities Act of 1906 to create national marine monuments in our coastal and territorial waters.

This proposal will have devastating impact to our economy and undermine the science based management that has already been put in place by the people of the nation and our elected officials. Disallowing the recreational angler is not the answer to saving our oceans.

The Save The Recreational Fisherman petition to The President of the United States of America was written by Jim Stewart and is in the category Government at GoPetition.
