MELBOURNE WATER IS PROPOSING TO REZONE AND SELL OFF PART OF HOPETOUN AVENUE RESERVE IN BRUNSWICK WEST.

This action is against Moreland Council’s Open Space Strategy (MOSS 2012) and State Government policies to protect public open space and to increase public open space as our city grows.

In this document, Moreland has been identified as one of the third lowest (of 29 municipalities) providers of open space per 1000 people in metropolitan Melbourne. With increasing population pressure, every bit of park in the municipality is of vital importance for the well-being of our future generations and worth preserving. The proposed parcel of land to be sold off provides a link to parkland across the street which would be lost to private development. It is currently zoned as environmentally significant (ESO) and therefore inappropriate for development.

We need our open space for our future population, not for Melbourne Water’s short-term financial gain.

We, the undersigned, call on Melbourne Water to reconsider the sell-off of the land at 1 Hopetoun Avenue, West Brunswick to private interests for development.

Gift the land to the City of Moreland, so it is retained as parkland for future generations of residents.

We also call on the City of Moreland and The Minister For Planning and Environment to put a stop the rezoning of the land from "Public Park And Recreation Zone (PPRZ)" to "Neighbourhood Residential Zone (NRZ)".
