In 2008 as part of the government funded Cycle Demonstration Town project Brighton & Hove City council opened the cycle freeway on The Drive/Grand Avenue in Hove. The cost was in the order of £550,000. It was described by BHCC as:
'The UK's first segregated `freeway' route between Hove and Hangleton, as part of the national and local cycle network. Monitoring in June 2008 indicates around 250 cyclists per day.'
Now The Conservative administration that put it in plan to spend £1.1 million, around twice as much taking it out again. In order to: "improve the visual impact and traffic flow along this important north – south corridor including access to the A27 / A23 from the A259 / Shoreham Harbour".

'We, the undersigned, call on the Conservative administration running Brighton & Hove City Council to withdraw its proposals to improve vehicular access to and from the seafront and Shoreham Harbour by spending £1.1m removing the cycle lanes on The Drive and Grand Avenue in Hove.
The increased traffic levels, particularly the likely greater use by heavy goods vehicles, will increase the risk to other road users particularly pedestrians and cyclists.
These cycle lanes were installed by the same Conservative administration in 2007-8 at a cost of around £550,000. To spend twice as much removing them now would be an irresponsible waste of public money. This money would be much better spent constructively elsewhere.
