Woodlawn Museum is the most historically significant residence in Downeast Maine, and was left to the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations by George Nixon Black, grandson of its found Colonel John Black, in 1928. Since that time the Museum has not only flourished as a gem in the community, but it holds a deeply held regard in the hearts and minds of generations of Ellsworthians who played on its grounds, toured its rooms, and worked to keep it in shape.

Now the Trustees have decided to tear down the existing Carriage House, which still bears a plaque of Nixon Black's horse, and "re-construct" a so-called "replica" in its place that will be attached to a several thousand square foot events center.

The Trustees have raised $8 million for the events center, but claim that the cost of making urgently needed restorations to the historic barn would be too expensive (!).

We, the undersigned, would like to appeal to the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations to re-consider their plan of destroying the historic carriage house at Woodlawn Museum. As the appointed stewards of this most important museum property in Downeast, Maine, we ask that they come to the realization that this plan is at once ill-considered and short-sighted and furthermore sets a dangerous precedent for the fate of other historic landmarks in the region.

We further ask that the Trustees devote a portion of the $8 million raised to build an events center towards making the urgently necessary repairs to the carriage house to ensure its restoration.
