Thank you to all who helped with this campaign. Smethwick fire station has been saved from closure.
The West Midlands Fire Service has announced plans to close Smethwick Fire Station.
Local residents and councillors say that the closure would leave Smethwick without its own dedicated fire station: this would lead to slower response times to fires, risking both lives and property.
John Spellar MP has said:-
“There had been a previous reorganisation in the Fire Service and we had all expected and hoped that the Service could now settle down. Now out of the blue the Fire Service Management announced further closures. Yet Smethwick has a high number of ‘at risk properties’ and many industrial premises. These proposals are unacceptable and I hope residents will unite against them.”
We, the undersigned, demand that Smethwick Fire Station remains open with a Fire appliance available 24 hours a day.
