The mayor and city aldermen are launching a plan to silence the train whistles in historic downtown Parkville. They are focusing their efforts on the possible installation of wayside horns. Wayside horns are less expensive than establishing a quiet zone. Wayside horns are muffled canned horn noise from a speaker system and do not come from the trains but are triggered by a train's approach. I strongly feel that silencing the train whistles would greatly diminish the charm and character of Parkville. The trains with their whistles are a big part of the rich history of this community. I believe that visitors come as much for the trains as they do for the MO river. This push by the city government is for the purpose of encouraging development in the downtown area, both residential and commercial. They are convinced that the "noise" from the trains is a deterrent to potential developers. They are willing to sacrifice the essence of Parkville for potential revenue.
