We object to the Wairoa District Council and the HBRC’s continual lack of commitment towards the restoration of the Waiau and Wairoa rivers. Silt and pollutants continue to be discharged into the rivers causing devastation to the life-force of the rivers.
WDC received $250,000 from Eastland Group as an out of court settlement for the clean up of the Waiau and Wairoa rivers, as a result of the damage caused by the construction of the Waihi dam. Of the $250,000, WDC allocated $100,000 towards a playground and $15,000 to the museum. Not one cent has been allocated to the restoration of the awa.
