SAVE NĀ KUENE O KAUKONAHUA

Aloha mai kākou!

Our group, Nā Kuene o Kaukonahua, has been put under the radar for investigation with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) for violating rules of water diversion and for construction of our own loʻi kalo (taro patch) on state land. We need your help to fight for our rights as Kānaka Hawaiʻi (Native Hawaiians) to continue to perpetuate as well as preserve the practices of our kūpuna (ancestors) for the future generations to come. If not, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will come to our loʻi kalo (taro patches) and break them down!

Kā Mākou Hana (Our Work):
Nā Kuene o Kaukonahua (The Stewards of Kaukonahua Stream) have cleared out lots of invasive species in the valley and have constructed loʻi kalo (taro patches) in efforts to create a Puʻuhonua (sanctuary) for Native Hawaiians in the community of Wahiawā. We wanted our people to have a wahi (place) to refer to whenever they feel the need to reconnect to their ʻāina (homeland). Our group was established by a handful of young kānaka (Native Hawaiians) with one common goal; to create a safe place where our culture could be perpetuated centrally for people located in Central Oʻahu. There arenʻt many places available for us to practice these types of things and learn the ways of our kūpuna (ancestors). We, as Nā Kuene o Kaukonahua (The Stewards of Kaukonahua Stream), come with this set of values that we hold dearly to our cause; to serve our kaiāulu (community), to mālama (take care of) our ʻāina (land), and to keep our culture alive!
