Remember when Kalgoorlie was an awesome place to party? When heading up town didn't mean waiting in a queue outside The Gold Bar from 12 til 2? When you could check out a couple of different places and decide which one had the better music/ crowd/ bar staff?

What has gone wrong here? Kalgoorlie-Boulder is fast getting a reputation as a town where it is impossible to secure a late-night liquor license. Having one place open late on weekends is not good enough. 80+ frustrated people waiting outside the only open nightspot in town is not safe!

So what is liquor licensing? It’s about regulation, “safety and the development” of industry and tourism. It’s about “development of facilities” “for the performance of live original music” reflecting our “diversity”. It’s about providing “adequate controls” for the staff that serve us and lastly (importantly), providing “a flexible system, with as little formality or technicality as may be practicable”. Read it straight from the Department of Racing, Game and Liquor website here: http://www.rgl.wa.gov.au/Default.aspx?NodeId=84&DocId=22

Something’s going wrong here. It’s time to demand that the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City Council and the Department of Racing, Game and Liquor know Liquor licensing explain why they are not fulfilling their duties. We demand investigation and answers.

Restricting late-night licensed venues isn’t just about less fun. It means street drinking, bored and frustrated young people, less socialisation, more FIFO workers, slowed population growth, less diversity, less tourism, slower local economy.

We, the undersigned, call on the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor licensing to review the liquor licensing process within the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

We call on the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to commence open and public discussions in review of it's current liquor licensing policies. We call on our local government representatives to fight for fair and progressive policies that effect Kalgoorlie late night venues.
