Background
In 2010, Armadale Properties owned by the Sifton Family, partner with Cadilllac Fairview to redevelop the Buttonville airport into a large mix-use commercial residential development. The airport was scheduled to close in fall 2016 but has been postponed to fall 2018. The air traffic control tower will also be closed there after.
In the meantime, Cadillac Fairview has delayed the redevelopment project till 2023 and the airport will continue to operate but with approximately 1/5 traffic 26,108 flights 2017 compared to 122,386 flights in 2013. Nav Canada did an assessment in 2017 and has concluded the closure of air traffic control tower will not material impact safety or efficiency of operation and will close the air traffic control tower on January 3, 2019.
The airport operator and local pilots asserted that the assessment was based on low traffic at the time and traffic has been double since then due to the delay of airport closure. The closure of the air traffic control tower will risk the lives in the air or on the ground around here.
York Region Council has unanimously passed a resolution deeming it unacceptable to close the Air Traffic Control Tower at Buttonville Airport. This is not the quiet little airport in a rural town, it's next to a residential area and the congested Highway 404. Emergency services such as York Regional Police and Ornge use Buttonville Airport and serve the broader community.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti advocated safety is the utmost important and recommended to scale the current 16 operating hour to reduce hour or peak time.
