We feel the Borough Council should be playing a much more proactive role to protect this important town centre site. The site is deteriorating with no secure future.
We feel that the Borough Council, as planning and regeneration authority, and the County Council as the authority responsible for social care should work more effectively to bring forward plans which have community support.
These should preserve the best features of the old hospital building, perhaps by developing it for 'extra care' accommodation for older people, and consult with local people accordingly.
We, the undersigned, call upon the Borough and County Councils to use their full influence to retain the hospital site on Baxter Gate for local people, whether as homes for older people with extra care or a mixed development with shops and flats, recognising its key town centre position and important heritage.
