We need your help please. Here is a little back story.
We have lived in Shawnigan Lake for 8 years and for almost 4 of them we have been back yard chicken (hens) owners. Due to a quick death in family, we had to sell our 1 br house to buy another house as we are now caretakers for my special needs sister inlaw. Unfortunately a neighbor has not taken to our hens and complained to the CVRD.
We have asked the CVRD to change the bylaw in line with all the other south island communities, as Shawnigan Lake is one of the last communities to update this bylaw between Victoria and Nanaimo when I did my research. The CVRDs response was it could be up to 2 years before they do this.
I am confident that CVRD will change the bylaw but it will be too late for my girls.
I am hoping with a petition signed they will look at it very quickly and allow me (and others) to keep my hens.
It is extremely important that we living on this island have local food sources. Backyard hens should be a normal thing. If anything drastic would happen that food couldn't come from the mainland, the island would be in trouble. We need to support our local farmers, hen keepers, bee keepers and other growers. Please take example from the recent wind storms.
People are also growing increasingly aware of where their food is coming from, how it is raised or grown and do not want food from unknown sources.
We are asking for you to sign this petition asking the CVRD to change the bylaw quickly and save the chickens!!
We, the undersigned are requesting the CVRD (Land Use department) review and change the bylaw concerning back yard hens for Shawnigan Lake to allow back yard hens within specific guide lines concerning coop size, set backs and number of hens allowed, with in 90 days of receiving this petition.
