Review the proposal for an Orascom fertilizer plant near Wever

For fiscal and environmental reasons we have concerns about the proposed Orascom fertilizer plant near Wever. We do not oppose job creation in Lee County.

We do oppose efforts by Osacom Construction Industries to exploit the current economic climate of Lee County and the nation by seeking favorable tax treatment to build a fertilizer plant so close to the Mississippi and Skunk rivers.

The location, which flooded in 1993, is a poor place for a production facility that will convert natural gas into nitrogen and ammonia fertilizer. Furthermore the company's insistence on millions of dollars in tax credits, tax abatements and tax increment financing is far more than the residents of Lee County and Iowa should have to provide.
