In recent weeks, the UCSB Recreation Center has begun to force patrons to cover up their torsos claiming that it is purely for sanitation purposes. Though women have never been allowed to wear sports bras, and men cannot wear sleeves cut down their sides, it is now banned to show even a single inch of one's torso. However, upon investigation and speaking to employees, it has been uncovered that one of the main reasons that this is put into place is because officials believe "fit" people exposing their bodies causes others to "feel intimidated" and not go to gym. Not only is an ineffective way to improve sanitation, but the gym itself is normally very hot and more clothing would exacerbate the problem. This protocol unfairly targets a specific group of people due to their body type. This in essence is body shaming, as avid gym goers are made to feel that the way they look is offending others.

We, the undersigned, call on the University of California, Santa Barbara Recreation Center to reverse this protocol and allow students to wear clothing appropriate for this gym environment regardless of body type or fitness level.
