We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and supporters of the Cape Cod Canal region, respectfully urge the Commonwealth to take prompt and coordinated action to repair—and ultimately replace—the Scusset Beach Fishing Pier.
Located within the 5th Barnstable District along Cape Cod Canal, the Scusset Pier is a treasured public resource and the only fishing pier on the Canal. In addition, it is the only ADA accessible fishing location on the Canal. This pier is more than just a structure—it is a place where families gather, traditions are passed down, and memories are made. It supports local tourism, provides equitable access for those who cannot fish from the shoreline, and stands as an important part of our community’s identity.
Today, however, a section of the pier is closed due to structural concerns. While public safety must always come first, this closure highlights the urgent need for investment in the pier’s repair and long-term replacement. Without action, we risk losing a one-of-a-kind asset that serves residents and visitors year-round.
We respectfully call on the Commonwealth to:
• Prioritize immediate repairs to safely reopen the closed section of the pier
• Conduct a full structural assessment of the existing pier
• Develop and fund a long-term plan to replace the pier with a modern, safe, and
accessible structure
• Engage with local stakeholders and the community throughout the process
The Scusset Beach Fishing Pier is a vital public resource that deserves our attention and commitment.
