Request for an Extras Scene on the Hobbit DVD, With The Heirs of Durin in The Halls of Waiting
- Peter Jackson
In the Hobbit movie trilogy Peter Jackson has taken characters that were barely sketched out in the book and fleshed them out, bringing them radiantly to life. In doing so he gave us characters to laugh with, to cheer on and to care about. The final battle cannot be changed but, having come to love the Sons of Durin, fans are understandably worried about seeing their friends die.
The ending must stand as written, but we are asking that Mr. Jackson give his fans a small scene on the “extras” for the There and Back Again DVD release. This scene would be set in the Halls of Waiting so that we can share the warm welcome that Thorin and his nephews will receive from the past kings of the Line of Durin.
We would respectfully ask if it might be possible to give the fans of The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey, a scene with Thorin, Fili and Kili being received into the Halls of Waiting after the Battle of the Five Armies. This could be placed in the extras so that it does not interfere with the canon of the marvelous book written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
You and the fine cast you have assembled have done a magnificent job of bringing the Dwarves to life. A cranky old man driven to find gold was changed to a magnificent warrior who fights to regain his home. The Dragon Sickness does not define him; it is his brave heart and sense of honor as well as his struggle to be worthy of being the King Under the Mountain that makes him a memorable character. Fili is the Lion of Durin, brave and honorable. Kili in spite of his youth is courageous and loyal. Both brothers were willing to lay down their lives to save their king. That they had to do so is painful to think about even now two years from when the final film will be released.
You and your cast made us love them and want the best for them. We wanted to see Thorin take his rightful place as King Under the Mountain with Fili and Kili at his side. This cannot be and we understand that. We would appreciate a scene to ease the ache that we will feel at their deaths. We realize that you can’t change the book, but you can let us see them strong and whole again, proud to be welcomed by kings past. Honor them as the great warriors they are. Honor us, as your supporters, by giving us something to ease the loss of characters who have become friends.
