This petition aims to challenge the due diligence legal loophole allowing traders to avoid prosecutions on knife sales to youngsters by arguing they cannot do anything more to stop shop assistants from selling to under 18s.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to remove the "due diligence" defence to stop shops escaping prosecution for underage knife sales.

This petition aims to challenge the due diligence legal loophole allowing traders to avoid prosecutions on knife sales to youngsters by arguing they cannot do anything more to stop shop assistants from selling to under 18s.

Jim Dowd MP considers that, in order to tackle weapon culture among young people, the Government must do everything it can to restrict their access to knives. This is why the petition was launched to change the law and remove this defence, forcing shops to take their responsibilities seriously.

It is hoped that with enough signatures the Government can be persuaded to change the law, force shops to significantly tighten their procedures, and stop children buying knives on the high street.
