This because it's just shameful! There is no such practice in the religion to immerse non-biodegradable items into the river or sea. I have ALWAYS been against this practice and it makes me extremely furious because I grew up by the beach/sea. Even though in the beginning we used to only place biodegradable items like flowers, fruits etc. we used to ALWAYS bring our rubbish (plastic/paper)home but we have now stopped this completely! Also, we have NEVER placed a picture or statue or any representation of God in such a manner.

There are two types of people who do this:

#1 - Religious devotees - These people don’t necessarily litter in the general sense but have been fed the wrong form of the scripture and practice by their parents and priests who are themselves ill-informed and actually tell devotees that it should be placed in the river/sea.

#2 - Land-based people - These people have zero respect for our rivers and seas because they do not stay anywhere close, don’t go for a picnic, swim or fishing so they don’t care because they don’t have to live with the filth they dispose of in the river/sea.

We live in a beautiful island with amazing river systems and surrounded by the sea with beautiful beaches. Hindus who do this are being inconsiderate to other people by littering and this practice is also harming our environment. This must stop!!!

Please sign the petition to stop Fijian Indians of Hindu descent to stop 'religious littering' in our rivers and seas.
