Reduce Speed Limit on Jandakot Road

There have been over 120 crashes on Jandakot Road during the past 5 years, 20 of them causing personal injuries, including 2 fatalities in the past 6 months.

Jandakot Road between Warton Road and Berrigan Drive for many years has had a speed limit of 80 kph arising from its classification as a “rural road”. However, 20,000 vehicles per day now use the road and yet Main Roads WA obstinately and repeatedly refuses to re-classify it, claiming that the road is safe at 80 kph. The City of Cockburn cannot change the speed limit without Main Roads’ approval.

Since 2012, this shocking record has made Jandakot Road eligible for Commonwealth 'Black Spot' funding but, remarkably, neither Main Roads nor the City of Cockburn has availed themselves of it.

Over the next 2 years, Jandakot Road between Fraser Road and Berrigan Drive will be widened to a 4 lane dual carriageway highway. Illogically, Main Roads says that it will consider reducing the speed limit to 70 kph when the road widening is completed and the road then much safer!

Puzzlingly, the speed limit on Berrigan Drive, which continues north from Jandakot Road and is of the same design, was recently reduced to 60 kph.

Jandakot residents, the Banjup Residents Group, and the Treeby Community Association have been campaigning since 2012 for the speed limit on Jandakot Road to be reduced but to no avail. In this petition we seek to demonstrate to the bureaucrats the overwhelming support of residents and users for an immediate improvement of Jandakot Road safety and prevention of casualties and deaths.
