Do we have the time, need or inclination for the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals?
There is the possibility this register will effectively become compulsory through its incorporation in the revised Site Investigation Steering Group specification due later this year.
In the view of some ground engineering professionals this register and its requirements are:
- Onerous and time consuming
- Unneeded
- Not worthwhile
- Protectionist, placing a disproportionate burden on smaller ground engineering companies
- An additional, unnecessary expense
All the aims of the register could be met by the improvement of existing systems and qualifications such as CEng and CGeol.
In addition this register has not been widely consulted on. Its requirements were only advertised recently while the system was being rolled out. This is unacceptable when it may affect engineers' livelihoods.
There's too much emphasis on measurement and recording in our lives. Let's not sleepwalk into more distractions and competency reports.
Please sign this petition if you are concerned about the possible impacts of the register.
We, the undersigned, call on the Ground Forum to reconsider the proposals for the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals.
The register should be withdrawn until:
- proper and representative consultation has taken place with the UK Ground Engineering community;
- proper evidence, rather than assertions, has been produced demonstrating a clear need for a register; and
- the results of a study, detailing the commercial impacts of the register on UK industry, is available.
