California jurors - the people who make the most critical decisions in criminal and civil court cases - currently receive a mere $15 per day for jury service. Whereas California Judges and lawyers receive thousands of dollars for work which only leads up to the jurors' decisions.
Judges and lawyers are no less constitutionally-required than are jurors. And nothing in either the US or the California Constitutions requires jurors be exploited by the lawyer industry to work for a pittance. California has one of the lowest rates among the states. For example, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Dakota and South Dakota each pay jurors $50 per day.
Many other states and federal courts pay $40 per day. Arizona and Oklahoma have a "Lengthy Trial Fund" which pays up to $200/day. California jurors deserve a decent wage for the important work they do!
We, the undersigned, call upon the California Legislature to lead the way and to raise the daily payments of jurors serving in the California Superior Courts to at least $100 per day.
